Blakiston was a member of John Palliser's exploring expedition and took command of the party charged with finding a railway pass through the Rocky Mountains. He explored the Kootenay and Boundary Passed as well as considering the Crownest and Flathead Pass. He named Waterton River and Lakes and the Livingstone Range and Mount Blakiston, the highest peak in Waterton Lakes National Park is named after him. His report is on pages 320-341 of the complete Journal of Science and the Arts, Second Series, Volume XXVII, July 1859 which includes Numbers 82, 83 and 84. There is an appendix by Sir R I Murhcison on the Palliser Expedition and a lithographed map of the Kootenay and Boundary Passes at the rear of the volume. One additional plate from another article.
