A quite comprehensive and extensively illustrated set. First published in parts with the original parts covers bound in at rear of each volume. Nine colour chromolithographs in Volume 1 and 13 of 14 called for in volume 2 (missing Norman Costume) and many black and white plates and hundreds of wood engravings in the text. Handsomely bound in half calf over mottled paper boards. Gilt ruled and decorated spine with raised bands and six compartments. Marbled endpapers and top edges. Very clean non-circulating ex-library copies with white accession numbers on lower spine and minimal interior markings. Original owner's bookplates on front pastedown. Rough spots and wear on leather including on lower spine from rough label removal but overall a bright and very handsome set. Heavy, special shipping considerations may apply.
